Two dedicated Nottingham-based Taylor Swift fan groups have been celebrating the unprecedented success of the singer’s new album, ‘Midnights’, since its release last month.

Midnights is the American singer’s tenth studio album and has been her most successful yet breaking sales and streaming records around the world.

On the first day of the album’s release, October 21, the streaming platform, Spotify, went down due “too many people trying to stream” the album and it has since gone on to break several sales and streaming records, across the world.

In response, one fan group, in the city, went out for a celebratory brunch, whilst the other sent endless messages about their favourite songs in group chats.

Chloe Littler, from The University of Nottingham‘s Taylor Swift Society said that “the group have been so excited, sending non-stop group messages about [their] favourite songs.”

She went on to explain how she thinks that the release of this album has been a moment for women to be celebrated.

“I think there is still a stigma that women in the music industry have some sort of expiry date, but with the success of Midnights I hope this will encourage the industry to accept more strong women,” she said.

It is the first time in history that the top 10 spots in ‘The Billboard Hot 100’ have been occupied solely by female artists, with only two women named in the chart.

Taylor Swift being the main contributor and Lana Del Rey featuring on her track ‘Snow on the Beach’, which sits at number four.

Another Notts-based fan group, NTU Swift Society, went for a group brunch to celebrate on release day, and are looking forward to ‘Swiftogeddon’, which is a Taylor Swift themed night at Nottingham’s Rescue Rooms, in December.
