A brand new LGBTQ+ led record and events label has been launched by two students under the name Genre Fluid.
They aim to champion inclusivity and shine a long-overdue light onto the incredible queer talent that exists within the heavier styles of dance music.
Co-founder Callum Board, 25, explained: “When you think of the queer music scene, you always think of house, disco or techno, but obviously there’s queer people in all the bassline, garage and drum & bass communities. There’s also loads of queer artists and ravers, but there’s not really any queer space for people to enjoy those things, hence why we wanted to start Genre Fluid.”
Lauren Goulder, 25, who created the label alongside Callum, said that Genre Fluid wants to carve their own space within the underground music industry by scheduling releases and curating a mix series with minority artists, as well as hosting LGBTQ+ majority bassline, UKG and DNB nights.
“You’ll be there purely for the artists, to support them, rather than just a big headliner.”
Lauren Goulder, Genre Fluid co-founder
Lauren added: “When we kick off and we start to do events, we’re not going to be saying ‘you can’t wear this, you can’t do that’, it’s going to be a big friendly atmosphere.
You’ll be there purely for the artists, to support them, rather than there just being a big headliner. We’re not trying to do that, we’re trying to make everyone feel comfortable and help more upcoming artists that have never been given that opportunity by the mainstream labels.”
What does LGBTQ+ stand for? Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and more (such as non-binary, pansexual, asexual etc.) Queer is an umbrella term for people who reject heteronormativity. Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people may all identify with the word queer.
Callum and Lauren are determined to start up Genre Fluid events with queer DJs and artists from across the country, as Lauren revealed one of their main goals this year:
“We’d like to visit some of the Pride’s, whether that means by that point we would be taking some artists that we’ve featured, or just by ourselves as the brand. I guess it would be such as a normal label or DJ hitting a festival really, we will target the Pride events. That would be a big achievement in our first year!”
