Forbes Opticians in Hadleigh in Essex is still open for emergency patients, despite the ongoing pandemic.

Co-owners of the firm, Jon and Jane Forbes, are keeping their doors open for two hours a day to relieve the NHS of some of its stress.

They have been triaging patients over the phone to discuss symptoms, and a decision is then made to whether they just need advice or a physical consultation.

Jon says, if it’s the latter: “We weigh up the risk to sight against the risk of both the patient and ourselves contracting the virus”.

Jane explained that she and her husband, Jon, are the only two working in the practice, and they have even been delivering glasses and contact lenses to patients.

Since they do not have any personal protection equipment, Jane worries about making her family ill, however without the emergency eye care they provide some people could lose their sight.

She says; “We are doing the best we can but we want to stay safe”.

The couple believe it is in the best interest of their patients to remain open if only for a limited time.
