A new lottery with a top prize of £25,000 is being set up by Gedling Borough Council – with the money going to local causes.

Sixty pence from every £1 ticket will go straight to local charities and campaigns, with the council now looking for good causes to sign up to the project. A launch event is to take place at 6pm on the 26th of February.

One good cause which has already signed up is charity We R Here, a volunteer-run organisation that provides counselling services for families suffering from various issues such as domestic violence and bereavement.

Charity CEO Hilary Brown has welcomed the new initiative. She said; “We R Here receives no statutory funding, we have to raise all of our money ourselves. So something like this lottery is so helpful to us.”

The charity plans to use the money to provide even more counselling for those who need it, with the unique service currently having a waiting list of up to a year.

Gedling Borough Council leader John Clarke hopes the lottery takes off and said that they already had 39 various groups, ranging from charities to community groups, which have expressed an interest.

The first draw for the lottery is on the 23rd May 2020.
