Costa has called for an urgent meeting with Waitrose in order to "discuss their plans for the staff currently employed and how they will be taking that matter forward”.

Shops in Blaby near Leicester and Ashbourne in Derbyshire are to shut, with over 100 jobs at risk.

The South Leicestershire MP Alberto Costa said: “The store has been an integral part of the Blaby community for almost half a century and they have weathered many changes to the local economy during that time.

“It is well known that the John Lewis Partnership and Waitrose have been experiencing some difficulties in the challenging economic climate of late.”

Waitrose retail director, Ben Stimson, said: “It is sadly – despite the hard work of everyone involved – not commercially sustainable for us to continue trading from them in the long term.

“Our priority is our partners working in those shops who will be fully supported throughout the process and we will identify opportunities for those wishing to remain with the business wherever possible.”

A store in Barry, and two in Devon are also set to close.
