There are claims that drivers avoiding road works in the city centre are putting pedestrians at risk as they perform illegal u-turns.

Friar Lane road leading to the Nottingham Castle has been closed off for repair works to be carried out and some drivers are carrying out u-turns when they see the road is closed.

Road Closure at Friar Lane

“PAY ATTENTION TO ON-STREET SIGNAGE WHICH IS IN PLACE TO ENSURE EVERYONE’S SAFETY”
COUNCILLOR DAVE LIVERSIDGE, PORTFOLIO HOLDER FOR TRANSPORT

The road will now be monitored after a number of signs have been ignored by drivers.

Pedestrian Lesley Heath tweeted ‘I often walk this way in to town and have also witnessed near misses [by the cross junction road]’.

Nottingham City Council says they “are working with Severn Trent Water to manage traffic while completing urgent repairs to a collapsed sewer”.

Councillor Dave Liversidge, Nottingham City Portfolio holder for Transport says “Signage has been put up to inform drivers of the road closure at the junction, but we have heard instances of drivers ignoring the ‘no right turn’ sign and completing an illegal U-turn.

“We are monitoring behaviour at the junction and we urge drivers to be considerate of other road users and pay attention to on-street signage which is in place to ensure everyone’s safety.”

How to avoid a Penalty Charge Notice?

  • Pay attention to the road signs and markings
  • Bus lane signs and markings will clearly indicate both the start and end of bus lanes and highlight the hours of operation. Parking and waiting/loading restrictions will be clearly signed
  • Tram gates and bus gates are clearly marked with map-based advanced direction signs placed on each approach road showing the route to take to avoid the restricted area, and with the relevant Regulatory signs placed at the beginning of the restriction
  • All drivers should not pay attention to the advice given by Sat-Navs and should comply with all traffic signs.  Any appeal referring to Sat-Navs as the reason for contravening the restrictions will not be accepted
