People who use E-cigarettes to quit smoking have almost twice the chance of success than people who use nicotine replacement products, according to a Nottingham expert.
Jason Owen, manager of The Vape Team, says there are benefits to using e-cigarettes which can help smokers quit.
He said: “I used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day, had a very tight chest and couldn’t breathe. But when I started vaping I could breathe a lot more.”
A study has fsound that E-cigarette users have a higher success rate to quit smoking.
The study is the first randomised controlled trial to compare the latest generation of e-cigarettes to nicotine patches, gum and other replacement products.
Also known as e-cigarettes, e-cigs, electronic nicotine delivery systems, vaporizer cigarettes, and vape pens, they are marketed as a way to stop or cut down on smoking.
The trial, which involved almost 900 smokers who also received additional behavioural support, found that 18% of e-cigarette users were smoke-free after a year, compared to 9.9% of participants who were using other nicotine replacement therapies.
Lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek, director of the health and lifestyle research unit at Queen Mary’s Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine, said: “This is the first trial to test the efficacy of modern e-cigarettes in helping smokers quit.”
He added: “E-cigarettes were almost twice as effective as the ’gold standard’ combination of nicotine replacement products.”
Furthermore, they found out that E-cigarette participants reported greater decline in incidents of cough and phlegm production after 52 weeks.
“a large number of smokers report that they have quit smoking successfully with the help of e-cigarettes.”

In addition, study author Dunja Przuli from Queen Mary’s Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine had positive feedback from the study.
She said: “The UK specialist stop smoking services will now be more likely to include e-cigarettes among their treatment options, and health professionals will feel more comfortable in recommending e-cigarettes as a stop-smoking intervention.”
