A man who was described as the “most wanted fraudster” has been jailed for 9 1/2 years at Leicester Crown Court.
Bayo Awonorin, 44, was charged with conspiring with others to defraud public institutions and to convert criminal property.
Awonorin was wanted in connection with Operation Tarlac, a fraudulent money laundering investigation which defrauded the Lincolnshire branch of NHS over £1.2million.
A £1.28m payment was diverted when the NHS failed to check the new bank details provided. The payment was set to build a new mental health unit at Lincoln St George’s Hospital
He was originally arrested in Maryland, USA, in April 2012, but fled the country whilst on bail. Lincolnshire Police requested to extradite him to the UK, back in September.
Awonorin is the fourteenth suspect to be convicted in the case – the largest and most successful fraud and money laundering investigation undertaken by Lincolnshire Police.
