Drivers have faced nine-hours of delays after a mains burst sent water shooting 80-feet into the air.
Contractors were carrying out repairs on the A52 near Gamston when they pierced the pipe at 6.30am. Freezing temperatures caused the road to ice over.
The road closure led to 20-minute delays for commuters coming into Nottingham, with the Eastbound carriageway closed.
The A52 between the Gamston Roundabout and the A46 at Saxondale reopened at 3.30pm.
Severn Trent Water said so homes were affected with water supplies being directed from other pipes.
