Three men behind the supermarket explosion which killed five people have been jailed for life.

Aram Kurd, the owner of the supermarket, along with associates Arkan Ali and Hawker Hassan, set fire to Zabka supermarket.

They used 50 litres of petrol alongside other flammable liquids doused all over the basement.

Their plan was to profit from an over inflated insurance claim of around £300,000.

The explosion took place on the 25th February last year, killing five people. One of those killed was part of the scam.

The victims included Mary Ragoobeer, her two sons Shane and Sean, along with Shane’s girlfriend Leah Reek.

They were in the flat above the shop in Hinckley Road, Leicester, when the explosion happened.

The fifth person who died, Viktorija Ijevleva, was in the store at the time of the explosion and was part of the conspiracy.

Michelle Keen, the Senior Investigating Officer, said “I’ve never dealt with a job that caused so much devastation, both to families who lost members, and to the wider community.”

Officers trawled over 700 hours of CCTV, tracking the movements of the defendants, to pull the case together.
