The once looked down upon music genre Grime has had a 93% increase in the number of streams and listens since 2016 according to the music app Musiclally.

According to the music charts,  Grime is more popular than ever before.  Currently, six Grime artists fill up space on the UK Top 40 with “Barking” by Ramz placing highest.

Influenced by American mainstream rap and drill music, Grime has become a very popular sub genre of rap due to its hard sounding and realistic lyrics. Normally associated with crime and gang violence, the genre has been used as a political tool for people to express themselves.

According to streaming service SoundCloud, the most uploaded genre of music from the UK is Grime.  It accounts for 51% of uploads from the UK. Up and coming Grime artist, Webs, believes that “Grime is becoming popular due to its accessibility on platforms such as SoundCloud”
