Independent food and drink venues in Nottingham are thriving despite worries the city is being filled with restaurants and bars.
Big cities like London have seen a surge in the amount of independent food and drink outlets, now other cities across the country are following suit.
Nottingham has enjoyed a 12.5 per cent increase in the number of independent bar and restaurants in the past three years – a study has shown. The city is third only to Leeds and Newcastle but has beaten the likes of London, Manchester and Liverpool.
The news comes after The Stonebaked Pizza Co became The Victoria Centre’s third chain restaurant to close in just six months. Coast to Coast and Joe’s Kitchen both shut earlier this year following stiff competition from both chain and independent restaurants.
Despite the surge in closures, Nottingham is expected to see a staggering 12 new restaurants open in 2017 with just four of these being chains. Restaurants such as Memsaab find being an independent restaurant improves their business.
The research that was commissioned by Northern Restaurant & Bar, classed independents as any operators that have three or less sites. Independent shops, bars and restaurants are becoming more popular across the country, especially in larger cities such as Nottingham.
Nottingham is home to a wide variety of independent restaurants and locals are always willing to try something different from the norm. independent venues give the opportunity for owners to be more creative and selective with their store and menus, as they’re not restricted by guidelines like chains.
Local people of Nottingham voted in our Twitter poll, and 76 percent said that they preferred independent restaurants and bars to chains.
