A Cake Off in aid of Nottingham-based charity ‘Vets in the Community’ which gives homeless people free veterinary care for their pets was hosted by the University of Nottingham Sutton Bonington Campus.

Vets in the Community is run by Vet School students from Nottingham  under the supervision of staff members. They run a clinic every other Wednesday at the Big Issue  office in Nottingham.

The charity, which relies solely on funding, provides free routine treatment for homeless and vulnerably housed people’s pets, including health checks, vaccinations, flea and worm chipping and microchipping.

Kaitlin Turnbull, Vets in the Community, tell us more about the charity.

Holly O’Connor, regional manager for the Big Issue in Nottingham, says that without Vets in the Community the animals and owners would be at risk.

She said: “I think if Vets in the Community didn’t exist then we would find that people wouldn’t necessarily be able to get the treatment they need for their dogs.

“Some stuff they really wouldn’t be able to afford so then the dogs would then suffer. Without all of that it would be detrimental to the individual as well as the dog.”

Organisers of the Cake off decided to change their charity from Comic Relief to Vets in the Community for their 5th anniversary this year.

This was after the charity was forced to crowd-fund for £3,000 due to shortage of funding.

The Cake off was judged by Great British Bake Off star Jordan Cox, who took part in season 5 of the BBC1 programme in 2014.

He accepted being a judge at the charity event, as the charity is something close to his heart. He and his partner run ‘Sneinton Cats’ rescue charity and so are animal lovers.

The Cake off was successful, with most of the cakes being auctioned off. The cakes that were left were sold to the public. They raised a total of £800 on the day.

Some of the winners of the Cake off included:

  • Best Title: “And This Little Piggy Made Bacon”
  • Public Vote: Spay That Bitch
  • Overall Winner: The Arboretum Tree Walk
