The New College Nottingham trainees are serving a three-course menu they have devised themselves at the city’s famous Marco Pierre White’s Steakhouse Bar and Grill at Alea Casino.

The second years have been working on their ideas for the past six months, leaving the staff blown away by their progress.

“They are doing things now that they didn’t realize they could do before,They are using terminology that was alien to them in week one”.

The Marco Pierre White Team is mentoring the students on everything from creating menus and themes to marketing, finances, advertising, and even health and safety.

Phil Thomlinson said: “They are doing things now that they didn’t realise they could do before, they are using terminology that was alien to them in week one. At first they were nervous but excited.”

Their ‘surf and turf’ menu offers a variety of options such as soft crab for starters, and sirloin steak with prawns, braised beef with oysters, and salmon for the mains. They are finishing off with a prosecco jelly for dessert.

One student, Charlotte Holleworth, believes the experience has been invaluable.

“If you get to takeover a high end restaurant such as MPW then its going to give you that buzz like yes I need to do this,” she said.

It is the second year the steakhouse, on Wollaton Street, has hosted the NCN students. Not only do the students on this course get to take over a restaurant they also get to travel the world.

Student, Ollie Harper, went to America to gain work experience. He said; “It gives you the opportunity to break out of your shell and get out of your comfort zone.”

Their dining showcase will take place on April 20th, priced at £25.
