NHS England is planning on offering pregnant women a £3,000 ‘personal budget’ which they can use on any NHS- accredited services they prefer.

From home births and one-to-one midwifery to aftercare , this move is aimed to provide more choices and support for pregnant ladies and is going to be piloted later this year.

Pregnancy can be a very vulnerable time and a  ‘birth budget’ will hopefully make a massive difference to so many individuals across the country.

The budget could be spent on any of the following services;
– Additional breastfeeding support following the birth
– A birthing pool
–  One-to-one Midwifery (the option of a home birth)
– Hypnotherapy to help and console any anxiety or pain.

In addition, the reconstruct is also aimed at bettering safety in maternity services. Within half of all the stillbirth care if certain additional elements were provided it could have made a significant difference.

Our vision for maternity services across England is for them to become safer, more personal, kinder, professional and more family friendly; where every woman has access to information to enable her to make decisions about her care; and where she and her baby can access support that is centred around their individual needs and circumstances. – National Maternity Review, England
